MINI TENNIS COMPETITIONS

MINI TENNIS FUN!

RED COMPETITION WINNERS SCHOLES PICTURED WITH RUNNERS UP LINDLEY AND 3RD PLACE NEWSOME JUNIORS

Newsome and Pennine School Sport Partnerships in conjunction with Huddersfield Lawn Tennis Club recently held 2 Mini Tennis Competitions.  The winners from both competitions would go onto represent Kirklees at the West Yorkshire Youth Games in June.

The first was a Mini Orange competition which is aimed at Year 5 pupils and is played on a smaller court , with a low compression orange ball that makes it bounce lower to aid better control at an important stage of the players development. Each team is made up of four players, 2 boys and 2 girls, ranked 1 to 4, matches are made up of 8 games of singles played first to 7 points and best of 3 tie-breaks.

Schools taking part:  Newsome Juniors, Honley Juniors, Rowley Lane, Scholes, Hade Edge, Lindley

The format was that the 6 teams were slit into 2 groups, schools then played each other once with the top team from each group playing in a final and the teams finishing 2nd and 3rd playing their respective opponents from the other group to decide their finishing positions.  After the group stages had concluded Scholes finished top of group A, winning both of their matches and losing only 2 of their 16 games!  An equally impressive Honley would meet them in the final after finishing top of Group B with 2 matches won and losing only 3 of their games!

The Final was incredibly close with some fantastic skills on display and long rallies being played out.  After all 8 games the scores were tied at 4-all, with only tie-breaks won separating the two sides Scholes emerged as winners taking 9 tie-breaks to Honley’s 8!

The Mini Red competition is aimed at school years 3 and 4.  Played with a sponge ball and on a court which is a quarter of the size of a full court, this gives the chance for players to develop different types of shots with long rallies.

Schools Taking part: Emley, Huddersfield Grammar, Rowley Lane, Newsome Juniors, Lindley, Scholes

The format for this competition saw 7 teams all play each other on a round robin basis.  Teams of 2 boys and 2 girls played matches of 8 games, each played as one tie-break, with the winner being first to 10 points.   After 21 matches, some entertaining shots and enthralling rallies, Lindley and Scholes were tied at the top of the table each with 5 wins and 1 draw from their 6 matches.  The teams could only then be separated by the number of points registered against each other in their match which was tied 4 tie breaks each. In that match Lindley amassed 58 points, but scoring 70 and going on to represent Kirklees at the West Yorkshire Youth Games were Scholes!

Well done to Scholes, and we wish them the best of luck in both competitions at the West Yorkshire Youth Games in June. All the young people taking part in the competitions scored their own matches, showing real maturity and creating a memorable atmosphere, both events were a great success!

The School Sport Partnerships would like to say a big thank you to Huddersfield Lawn Tennis Club and their head coach Rebecca Lee for  organising and hosting the competitions.
